Program Information

An Employee Assistance Program is a benefit that is made available to you by your employer. The purpose of this benefit is to assist employees with any personal or professional concern that is impacting you and thereby your workplace performance.

The EAP program can address many different types of concerns.
Some examples include:
  • Marital/relationship

  • Grief

  • Family issues

  • Referrals for financial concerns

  • Communication issues

  • Co-worker conflict

  • Emotional stress

  • Occupational information

  • Any difficulty that is affecting workplace performance

How Do I Contact the EAP?

The EAP program can be contacted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through a toll free number (1-888-276-6632). Professional staff is available during business hours (8:30-5:00). After business hours services are still accessible for confidential messages or to address those in need of urgent/emergent services. Due to the volume of calls, confidential voicemail is also utilized during business hours.

What Happens After I Call?

After you contact the EAP program, the first step will be to discuss your situation with an EAP professional and to develop a plan of action. This plan may include:

  • A recommendation for a face-to-face appointment with an EAP provider to complete an assessment and further develop a plan of action.

    • Following the assessment, a recommendation may be made for a number of EAP Sessions - the number of available sessions is determined by your contract. Your EAP provider will explain your benefits.

  • Referrals to community resources

    • At times, a recommendation for mental health or chemical dependency treatment may be recommended. (This level of treatment is not covered under the EAP program. A referral utilizing your health insurance will be suggested)

  • A combination of the above services

Who is Eligible to Utilize the EAP?

Benefit eligible employees and their immediate family members who have dependent status.

Can I Still Call the EAP Program if I Don't Identify Any Workplace Impact?

Definitely. An EAP provider can help you to clarify your concerns, make referral suggestions and possibly help you to identify an overlooked workplace impact.

Can I bring my family to the EAP?

Family concerns often play a major role in workplace performance. When these concerns are impacting the primary worker, families can also utilize the EAP. Please contact the EAP to help clarify your situation and determine how we may help both you and your family.

Is the EAP Confidential?

Use of the EAP program is confidential except in very specific circumstances. These circumstances include:

  • Written consent to release information, signed by the employee or dependent who is receiving services.

  • Suspected child abuse for children under 18.

  • Medical emergencies.

  • Significant threat to self or others.

  • Receipt of judicial subpoena/court order.

  • As limited by state and federal law.

Is the EAP Expensive?

EAP services are provided to employees at no cost. When you speak with an EAP provider, they will answer any coverage questions you may have.

In some circumstances, a clinical situation is identified and a recommendation for further professional treatment is made. Examples of these situations include drug or alcohol dependency or identified behavioral health situations (i.e. depression, anxiety etc.) that would not benefit from short term EAP intervention.

Any referrals made for treatment outside of the EAP program are not covered by EAP. Coverage may be provided by your health insurance or the referral source may offer a sliding fee scale. Questions regarding insurance coverage can be clarified by your insurance carrier or your human resources department.

How many times can I use the EAP?

The EAP program is provided as a benefit to you. There is no limit to the number of times you can use the program.

What if I would like someone at work to know what is happening with me?

In some circumstances, you may decide that your supervisor or someone at the workplace needs to know what is happening with you. In those circumstances, the EAP program can work with you to develop a plan to approach the workplace.

What are Administrative Referrals?

Your employer may determine a need to make an administrative referral to the EAP - this type of referral is usually based on declining workplace performance and may require disclosure of appointment information. An employee may choose not to comply with an administrative referral, but doing so may indicate an unwillingness to resolve workplace concerns and disciplinary actions may result or continue based on the policies and procedures of your workplace.

What are Mandatory Referrals?

A Mandatory Referral is for serious workplace policy violations which may include use of alcohol or drugs, violation of your organization's alcohol or drug policy or where the safety of an employee is jeopardized. Continued employment may be contingent upon your acceptance and continuous activity either with the EAP program or with any outside programs to which an employee is referred. Questions regarding mandatory referrals can be discussed with your employer, the EAP program, a union representative, or your HR department.

Are there times when the EAP will be at the worksite?

Yes. Your EAP provides additional services to your employer including workplace trainings. You may have the opportunity to attend trainings on a variety of work and family concerns. Also, some employers may make office space available for employees to meet directly with the EAP at the worksite. You may contact the EAP program to discuss this option. Finally, Prism Quality EAP is often on site during health fairs and open insurance enrollment to assist with any questions you may have about the EAP.
