INFORMATIONAL UPDATE
Managing Memories – 9/11 AnniversaryMost Americans were at work when they watched the horror of September 11 unfold. Today, Americans will again be at work, this time reliving the tragic events of that morning. Although each person’s reaction will vary in degree, the anniversary is bound to trigger a wide range of emotions.
Today there will be much talk about what we were all doing on this day two years ago. There will be many tributes and media attention on this day. Will you benefit from these memories that are sure to come? Or, is hearing as little as possible your preference? Each of us will experience this anniversary differently. For those personally affected by 9/11, the decision to watch film clips, ceremonies, and special media programs can be a difficult one. Think carefully about what helps you with grief or loss. Do you benefit from learning as much as possible about what happened? Are you helped by deeply moving and symbolic tributes? All of us deal with grief and loss differently. Knowing what works for you and respecting differences in others will help us all. In any event we will never forget.
Consider these tips to make this anniversary time a little easier:
• Remember, it is normal to have difficult memories around the anniversary of a traumatic incident. • If you feel like talking, reach out to supportive friends and family. • Writing can be helpful. Consider writing a story or account about what happened that day for future generations. • To manage anxiety, try exercise, doing things that are fun, eating well-balanced meals, and getting plenty of rest. • Do not use alcohol or drugs to manage difficult memories. This can compound the problem. • Consider whether stress symptoms are lingering from the anniversary time. Turn to your EAP program for help or assistance with other problems that may be associated with 9/11. As always you can count on Prism Quality EAP for whatever assistance and support you may need.
